The contraceptive injection Depo-Provera can increase your risk of osteoporosis and broken bones. Several studies have shown that bone density decreases by a small amount in women using Depo-Provera. This mainly happens in the first few years on Depo-Provera, then the bone density stabilises.

High doses or long-term use of medicines called proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) can raise the risk of bone loss. PPIs, such as esomeprazole, lansoprazole, and omeprazole, are used for GERD (acid reflux), peptic ulcer, or heartburn. However, getting enough calcium and vitamin D may be enough to lower the risk.

Side effects of steroid injections

Managing a cortisone flare

You can take over-the-counter pain medication, such as ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) or acetaminophen (Tylenol), to try to reduce the pain if icing the area doesn’t help. Within a few days of receiving your cortisone injection, the pain from the flare should go away and you should feel relief.

Cortisone is a steriod, and some of the potential side effects can be headaches, slow wound healing, nausea, and mood changes to name just a few.

As a general rule, we suggest that you rest for a minimum of 2 days after a steroid injection. After 2 days, we would suggest that you can gradually build up your activity levels. However, this advice does vary depending on what area is being injected.

Call your doctor right away if you have a rash, itching, trouble breathing, trouble swallowing, or any swelling of your hands, face, or mouth while you are using this medicine.
